Leading and Living With Change

Organizations don’t change.  People change.  And as the renowned author Margaret Wheatley said in her book titled Leadership and the New Science – “Anything living will change only if it sees change as a means of preserving itself.”

We humans tend to respond to change in one of three ways: 1) We respond neutrally because we expect it to have little or no impact on us; 2) We respond positively because we anticipate the change will serve or benefit us; or 3) We respond hesitantly or negatively because we expect it to cause harm or put us at a disadvantage.  Either way, we react based on how we perceive the change to impact us personally.  That’s the reality of change.  Whether at home or at work, it’s personal.

Go beyond traditional change management theories and frameworks and delve into the personal side of change.  Understand the critical perspectives and concepts that influence how we view change and why – why it can be literally paralyzing for some, while invigorating for others - and how to use this understanding to better support and engage your team or organization through complex change.

What Got You Here Won’t Get You There

Be it career development, academic achievement or athletic success, this concept applies to any individual or team wanting to grow, develop and succeed in a new environment.  As our work environment changes (new role, new responsibility, new organizational structure, etc.), how we approach it must sometimes change as well.  Teams and leaders who understand this notion are better prepared to excel during times of change than those who are rooted in status quo.

First Know, Then Master Your Habits

Our habits (both conscious and subconscious) have a great deal of impact on our behaviours and our mindsets.  We, as individuals, know this well.  But how aware are we of our team habits?  What abour our organizational habits?  How well do we understand these and their impact on our success?  From the obvious to the virtually unseen habits we perform daily, learn to see where these exist, how to determine those that are either serving or holding you back, and where to build new habits to support your team or organization’s success.
